Label: Jewish – Insights into Two Collections

This evening offers rare insights into two of Hamburg’s most significant Jewish collections and their remarkable histories. Today, MARKK preserves ten objects and documentary traces from the former collection of the Gesellschaft für jüdische Volkskunde, which once comprised several hundred objects. The historic library of the Jewish Community of Hamburg is now held on permanent deposit at the Hamburg State and University Library. It contains more than 13,000 volumes in German, Hebrew, and Yiddish, including important religious publications and early Hebrew printed works. The speakers will explore the significance of these two pre-war collections for Hamburg’s cultural memory and discuss their lasting historical importance.
