A Pop Up Teahouse

Between Hamburg & Shanghai
As part of the closing event for the exhibition *Fresh Off the Press: The 1920s—Insights into China’s Modernity* and the 40th anniversary of the Hamburg–Shanghai city partnership, the MARKK is presenting a special pop-up teahouse: In this temporary, creatively reimagined teahouse, storytelling salons, printing, and writing workshops come together to form a participatory, cross-generational experience. Featuring the artists and designers Yimeng Wu (Studio WU 無), Xinyu Weng (yuue Design), Haiyue Tao (normal.normal.), and Katja Hellkötter (C*SPACE Berlin)

Images, Media, Modernity. In this curator-led tour, discover the visual diversity of 1920s and 1930s China—a period of rapid modernization during which prints became powerful ambassadors of a new way of life. The curator offers insights into the development of the exhibition, the historical significance of this unique collection, and the German-Chinese research collaboration through which many of the works came to the MARKK. Learn how mass media, fashion, and visual culture were closely intertwined, and why this fascinating period continues to resonate today.Museum admission not included.

Explore social issues or discover the stories behind museum objects in a playful way.Drawing on highlights from MARKK's vinyl archive—including pop, R&B, reggaeton, jazz, funk, and experimental beats—you'll find samples, create your own beats, and develop your own style. Sampling is the art of reimagining existing music by reusing short melodies, beats, or vocal snippets to create something entirely new.
