Leak: The Other Side of the Pipeline. Postcolonialism and Siberia

In their presentation of the book Leak: The Other Side of the Pipeline, Philipp Goll, the book’s editor, and Tjan Zaotschnaja discuss the long history of Siberia’s development as a Russian-German project. Drawing on Oleksiy Radynski’s essay film Where Russia Ends (Ukraine 2023), the discussion will address the situation of indigenous communities in Russian-occupied territories, the destructive violence of the gas industry’s extractivism, and anti-colonial activism in Northern Eurasia and in exile. The focus will be on the imperial gas pipeline deals between (West) Germany and (Soviet) Russia since the 1970s as a rarely discussed case of environmental justice and global trade.
