Contemporary History after Colonialism

In this lecture, the renowned historian and newly appointed Director of the des Leibniz-Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung Potsdam key ideas from her current book project—what she herself describes as “a report from the workshop.”

With her concept of a “Contemporary History after Colonialism,” Metzler seeks, on the one hand, to draw attention to the ways in which Western societies have engaged with their colonial past. On the other, she examines the enduring influence of colonialism on Western societies, thereby addressing a gap in current scholarship on contemporary history.
