Artist in Residence 2023

Anfernee Nenol Kaminaga was artist in residence at MARKK in 2023. Nenol is a queer, indigenous artist from the Marshall Islands and grew up in the diaspora. This background inspires Nenol’s works, which deal with the return to one’s own traditional roots and a new, alternative and modern lifestyle. One of these works was shown in the exhibition “Loose Ends” at MARKK.
Nenol also works in the areas of climate change, nuclear justice, LGBTQI+ rights, human rights and children’s rights. Nenol’s poem “This Land I Call Mama” and film “lakwe Means Hello” address the experience of rediscovery and rootedness in indigenous culture. Nenol’s works have been shown at the Bishop Museum in Hawaii by Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong and @Waves Productions and in “We Have a Dream” by World Dream Project, Japan.
