‘Resistance x Life’

We are delighted to welcome the eeden series ‘Resistance x Life’ and the sociologist Dr Rosa Burç to the MARKK. Learning about and exploring the world — both within and without — can continue throughout one’s life. Throughout one’s life, a person can grow, learn new things, rediscover old ones, shed layers and transform. Learning to truly be human in times of dehumanisation, oppression, fascist tendencies, military build-up, warmongering and exploitation. Exploring the artificial walls and borders, trenches and chasms that lie between us, which we maintain sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously. So how can we learn and grow in solidarity and resistance in these times? How can we live, rather than merely survive?

In the eeden series ‘Resistance x Life’, we set out in search of answers to these questions and invite authors of resistance to get to know them, their books, their thoughts and their perspectives more closely, to immerse ourselves in their words and to engage in conversation with you. In resistance, in solidarity and in connection. As always, the event will take place at eeden, in a unique, intimate and welcoming space.

Biography:

Dr Rosa Burç is a sociologist and works as a research associate at the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM) within the National Discrimination and Racism Monitor (NaDiRa) and the Migration Department.

She completed her PhD at the Centre for Social Movement Studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, Italy, specialising in transnational systems of violence, mobilisation in conflict, and political imaginaries. Her work examines how narratives and repertoires of resistance are transmitted across time and space, particularly amongst Kurds and other stateless and marginalised communities. Her ethnographically based doctoral thesis, which received an Honourable Mention from the American Political Science Association in 2025, examines the transnational repercussions of violence and forms of social transformation.

She is an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Peace and Conflict Research (INTERACT) at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin). Previously, she was a visiting researcher in the ‘Macro-Violence’ research group at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research (HIS). After completing her studies in Sociology and International Politics at SOAS, University of London, she taught as a research assistant at the Chair of Government at the University of Bonn. In the summer term of 2023, she was also a lecturer at the Centre for Near and Middle Eastern Studies at Philipps University of Marburg.
