Im September 2025 feiert der Inselstaat das 50-jährige Jubiläum seiner Unabhängigkeit. Zu diesem Anlass will das MARKK im Umfeld der Ausstellung „Pippis Papa und eine wirklich wahre Geschichte aus dem Pazifik“ den Spuren einer geteilten Geschichte nachspüren. Welche Impulse und Erwartungen gehen von den Feierlichkeiten aus und inwiefern spiegeln sich die kulturelle und künstlerische Vielfalt dieses Landes und seine kolonialen Verflechtungen mit dem Deutschen Kaiserreich in den Sammlungen des MARKK? In Gesprächen und Beiträgen werden aktuelle Entwicklungen aufgezeigt und laufende Projekte mit Partner:innen aus Papua-Neuguinea vorgestellt.

Künstlerin Gazellah Bruder und Projektpartner Nakni Nelly werden hierfür mit Dr. Jeanette Kokott, Kuratorin der Abteilung Ozeanien, und Dr. Jasmin Günther, Provenienzforscherin für den kolonialen Kontext, in das Gespräch treten.

Gazellah Bruder ist eine international bekannte Künstlerin aus Papua-Neuguinea, die derzeit als Artist-in-Residence am LIA Leipzig International Art Programme teilnimmt. In ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit, die unter anderem Malerei und Druckgrafik umfasst, beschäftigt sie sich mit einer Vielzahl von sozialpolitischen Themen. Ihr Aufenthalt in Leipzig wird vom Auswärtigen Amt gefördert.

Nakni Nelly wird das MARKK im Rahmen eines Provenienzforschungsprojektes zur Hamburger Südsee-Expedition (1908-1910) von Ende September bis Anfang Oktober besuchen, um gemeinsam an den Beständen von den Siassi-Inseln zu forschen und ihre Erwerbsumstände kritisch zu beleuchten. Nakni Nelly, der bei der Morobe Provincial Administration in Lae arbeitet, hat familiäre Beziehungen zu der Insel Malai und hat im Juni 2024 die Delegation von den Siassi-Inseln zum Festival of Pacific Arts in Hawaiʻi begleitet.

Das Provenienzforschungsprojekt zur Hamburger Südsee-Expedition wird gefördert vom Deutschen Zentrum Kulturgutverluste und unterstützt von der Hamburgischen Wissenschaftlichen Stiftung.

Conversation on Papua New Guinea’s 50th Anniversary of Independence

In September 2025, the island nation will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its independence. To mark this occasion, the MARKK plans to trace the footsteps of a shared history, including in the context of the exhibition “Pippi’s Papa and a Totally True Story from the Pacific”. What impulses and expectations emanate from the celebrations, and to what extent are the cultural and artistic diversity of this country and its colonial ties to the German Empire reflected in the MARKK’s collections? Discussions and contributions will highlight current developments and present ongoing projects with partners from Papua New Guinea.

Artist Gazellah Bruder and project partner Nakni Nelly will discuss these topics with Dr. Jeanette Kokott, curator of the Oceania department, and Dr. Jasmin Günther, provenance researcher with a focus on collections from colonial contexts.

Gazellah Bruder is an internationally renowned artist from Papua New Guinea, who is currently participating as an artist-in-residence at the LIA Leipzig International Art Programme. In her artistic work, which includes painting and printmaking, she deals with a variety of socio-political issues. Her residency in Leipzig is sponsored by the German Foreign Office.

Nakni Nelly will visit MARKK from late September to early October as part of a provenance research project on the Hamburg South Sea Expedition (1908-1910) to jointly research the collections from the Siassi Islands and critically examine the circumstances under which they were acquired. Nakni Nelly, who works for the Morobe Provincial Administration in Lae, has family ties to the island of Malai and accompanied the delegation from the Siassi Islands to the Festival of Pacific Arts in Hawaiʻi in June 2024.
