Tuli Mekondjo – Performance und Gespräch

Zentral in Tuli Mekondjos künstlerischer Praxis ist die Auseinandersetzung mit Fotoarchiven aus der Kolonial- und Kriegszeit, die namibische Geschichte und Identitätspolitiken. Die Künstlerin aktiviert Archivmaterialien, wie Fotografien und auditives Material, und entwickelt daraus ihre Performance. Tuli Mekondjo interessiert sich für die Geschichte des Wandels, des Verlusts und der Unterwerfung in Namibia und verbindet Vergangenes mit Gegenwärtigem. Die Künstlerin gibt den ungehörten Frauen eine Stimme, die von dem patriarchalen System unsichtbar gemacht werden.

Die Performance Ikayiwa yoluhepo / Headdresses of Affliction kombiniert verschiedene spirituelle Praxen und verkörpert eine Form des dekolonialen Widerstands, der Selbstbestimmung und der Heilung. Mit Hilfe einer vielschichtigen Symbolsprache würdigt die Künstlerin ihre Vorfahren, während sie gleichzeitig geschlechtsspezifische Kämpfe, generationenübergreifende Traumata und Vertreibung kommentiert.

Tuli Mekondjo (*1982, Angola) ist eine namibische Mixed-Media und Performance-Künstlerin. Seit 2022 ist sie Teil des renommierten DAAD- Berliner Künstlerprogrammes

Central to Tuli Mekondjo’s artistic practice is her engagement with photographic archives from the colonial and wartime periods, Namibian history and identity politics. The artist activates archival materials, such as photographs and auditory material, and develops her performance from them. Tuli Mekondjo is interested in the history of change, loss and subjugation in Namibia and connects the past with the present. The artist gives voice to the unheard women who are made invisible by the patriarchal system.

The performance Ikayiwa yoluhepo / Headdresses of Affliction combines various spiritual practices and embodies a form of decolonial resistance, self-determination and healing. Using a multi-layered symbolic language, the artist pays tribute to her ancestors while commenting on gendered struggles, intergenerational trauma, and displacement.

Tuli Mekondjo (*1982, Angola) is a Namibian mixed-media and performance artist. She is the recipient of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in 2022.
