„Pan-African Worldmaking“ – Globales Denken für die Zukunft

Wer die gesellschaftliche Situation der afrikanischen Staaten verstehen will, sollte dieses Gespräch nicht verpassen. Adom Getachev, renommierte Wissenschaftlicherin der Universität Chicago ist eine der einflussreichsten Stimmen im gegenwärtigen postkolonialen Diskurs. Ihr Werk Die Welt nach den Imperien. Aufstieg und Niedergang der postkolonialen Selbstbestimmung (2022), das einen neuen Blick auf antikoloniale Kämpfe des 20. Jahrhunderts wirft, wurde auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse begeistert aufgenommen. Nun kommt sie zum ersten Mal nach Hamburg und steht für einen Vortrag und Gespräch über „Pan- African Worldmaking“ im MARKK zur Verfügung. In dem Gespräch wird Adom Getachew auf die Verbindung des von ihr geprägten Begriffs „Worldmaking“ zu ihrer Ausstellung Project a Black Planet eingehen und auch darauf, was in europäischen Debatten um Raubkunst und Wiedergutmachung fehlt.

Adom Getachew, a renowned academic at the University of Chicago, is one of the most influential voices in the current post-colonial discourse. Her work „Worldmaking after Empire: The Rise and Fall of Self-Determination“ (2019), which offers new perspectives on the anti-colonial struggles of the 20th century, was enthusiastically received at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Now she is coming to Hamburg for the first time and will be available for a lecture and discussion on ‘Pan-African Worldmaking’ at MARKK. In the talk, Adom Getachew will discuss the connection between the term ‘worldmaking’, which she coined, and her exhibition Project a Black Planet, as well as what is missing in European debates about looted art and restitution.

Adom Getachew ist Professorin für Politikwissenschaft und Race, Diaspora und Indigenität an der Universität von Chicago. Sie ist die Autorin von „Die Welt nach den Imperien.
Aufstieg und Niedergang der postkolonialen Selbstbestimmung“
(2022) und Mitherausgeberin, mit Jennifer Pitts von „W. E. B. Du Bois: International Thought“ (2022). Als Teil eines vierköpfigen Kurator:innenteams kuratierte sie die Ausstellung „Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica“ und war Mitherausgeberin des dazugehörigen Katalogs. Derzeit arbeitet sie an einem zweiten Buch über die intellektuellen Ursprünge und politischen Praktiken des Garveyismus. Ihre Veröffentlichungen erschienen in Dissent, Foreign Affairs, der London Review of Books, The Nation, der New York Review of Books und der New York Times.

Adom Getachew is Professor of Political Science and Race, Diaspora & Indigeneity at the University of Chicago. She is the author of „Worldmaking after Empire: The Rise and Fall of Self-Determination“ (2019) and co-editor, with Jennifer Pitts, of „W. E. B. Du Bois: International Thought“ (2022). As part of a four-member curatorial team, she curated the exhibition „Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica“ and co-edited the accompanying catalogue. She is currently working on a second book on the intellectual origins and political practices of Garveyism. Her public writing has appeared in Dissent, Foreign Affairs, the London Review of Books, the Nation, the New York Review of Books, and the New York Times.
