The Art Residency is awarded to a promising and exceptional artist working in all forms of media (visual, graphic, literary, performance etc.) who will stay in Hamburg for three months within the framework of a major grant awarded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation).
The Museum am Rothenbaum, one of the premier ethnographic museums in Germany, is in the course of a major repositioning process that includes a renovation of the museum building, the new conceptualization of the permanent display, a reconfiguration of the program and a critical engagement with its own institutional and collection histories.

Thematic Focus
The Museum invites an international emerging artist to engage with the prominent Oceania holdings of the Museum am Rothenbaum. Important parts of the collection derive from the Hamburg South Seas Expedition (1908—1910), which was initiated by museum director Georg Thilenius and focused on some of the major areas of German colonial interest in the Pacific. A large number of objects from the former Museum Godeffroy and acquisitions from oversea merchants and colonial agents, missionaries, and art dealers are further central to the collection.
The Museum am Rothenbaum encourages projects that engage the holdings by addressing the history of museum collections and the (post-)colonial legacy, critiques of representation and the production of difference, untold stories and counter-narratives, transnational identities in Hamburg, among other possible approaches. What are – in this context – the missing pieces and untold stories of the objects? Museum am Rothenbaum aims at working with an artist who specializes in similar questions and can thus engage in a fruitful artistic dialogue with the institution.

Activities and outcome of the residency
– Development and creation of a work of art which will be exhibited at Museum am Rothenbaum in 2020.
– Participation in one internal Workshop on February 18 and 19, 2020
– Artist Talk or other public event in Hamburg during residency
– Provision of visual/graphic and text material for a publication.
– Small publication

Requirements for application
The museum is searching for a professional artist (no student) who has theoretical expertise and practical experience in dealing with complex and sensitive issues such as colonialism, migration, climate change and/or the reinterpretation of ethnographic collections. The Art Residency receives a stipend of 8.500 Euro. The Artist is responsible for taxation and health care coverage. The museum will provide a small art studio, access to the object, photo and archival collection and to the museum library network. Production costs for the art work will be covered up to a certain amount.

Applications can be submitted in English or German.
A selection committee will choose among the applicants. During the residency, the artist will create a context specific installation/object/media piece, which will be exhibited at the museum in 2020.
