DECOLONYCITIES KIGALI-HAMBURG

In Englischer Sprache

DECOLONYCITIES KIGALI-HAMBURG is a project that acts at the interface between dance and visual arts and sets in motion a process of decolonization. It’s about a change of perspective that artistically allows us to approach this topic differently. What is the colonial past between Kigali and Hamburg? How is this story archived – inside and outside the museum? The MARKK is on the one hand a place of performance and at the same time the center of these questions.

From June 18th to 20th , 2021, the choreographer Yolanda Gutiérrez and the MARKK will organize the performance DECOLONYCITIES between the city of Kigali and Hamburg. For the project, five artists from the former German colony of Rwanda were invited to Hamburg in order to use on-site artistic research to deal with the colonial past anchored in public space. The allegedly carved evidence of colonialism is countered by a separate, physical-choreographic perspective, which is shared with the audience in a silent walk performance at these special locations between MARKK and the University of Hamburg is explored, which was built as a colonial institute. Through dance interventions and an accompanying audio piece, which the audience can follow through headphones, they experience a critical, artistic and decolonizing view of the city of Hamburg.

The invited performers from Rwanda include the actress Eliane Umuhire, the artist Chris Schwagga as well as the two dancers Frank Mugisha and Babou Tight King, who cast a new perspective on the city with their individual experiences and biographies, thereby providing a view of the past and the Question about the future can be asked anew. The Togolese dancer, based in Hamburg Moussa Issiaka is also part of the team.

Premiere by Friday 18th at 3 pm.

Further performances will take place at 5 p.m. on Friday June 18th Saturday, June 19th , 2021 and on Sunday, June 20th , 2021 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
