As a canonical artist, community knowledge contributing to Nampeyo’s stature has been marginalized. Focusing there and attentive to overlooked innovations, Lea S. McChesney considers the social value of pottery; her agency in ensuring economic survival; her revival of a visual language embedded in local aesthetics; and her circulation beyond the community enabling critical knowledge to be brought home. An example of relational curation in a recent exhibition bridges traditional and institutional knowledges, redressing these omissions.
