Dekolonisierung ist in aller Munde. Doch was heißt das in der Praxis? Wie dekolonisieren wir  Kunstmuseen und ethnologische Museen und wie können Sammlungen, die aus kolonialer Gewalt entstanden sind oder diese unterstützten neu geordnet werden? Wie sollen wir Prozesse der Restitution oder Neukontextualisierung von Objekten strukturieren, neue Zugänge schaffen und neue Besucher:innen erreichen?

Diese eintägige Konferenz am MARKK bringt Museumspraktiker:innen, Künstler:innen, Theoretiker:innen und Historiker:innen zusammen. Wir gehen der Frage nach, welche Materialien, Techniken, Sprachen und Konzepte verwendet wurden, um dem kolonialen Modell der Museen zu widersprechen. Wie werden neue räumliche Erfahrungen geschaffen? Wie werden andere Formen des Ausstellens entwickelt? Wie können Museen neue Beziehungen der Einbeziehung und Reaktion auf ihre lokalen und transnationalen Interessengruppen herstellen? Wohin sollte sich das Museum des einundzwanzigsten Jahrhunderts schließlich entwickeln?

While the imperative of “decolonizing” the museum is frequently invoked, we are still clarifying what precisely this should involve.  We are in the middle of thinking how art and ethnographic museums should reorganize collections formed from, or in support of, colonial violence. How should they structure processes of restitution or re-contextualization of objects, seek new accessions and serve new publics?

This one-day conference at MARKK brings together museum practitioners, artists, theorists and historians. It explores what materials, techniques, languages and concepts have been used to contradict the colonial model of the museums. How are new spatial experiences created? How are different ways of exhibiting developed? How can museums establish new relations of inclusion and response to their stakeholders, both local and transnational? Ultimately, where should the Twenty-First century museum be going now?

The conference will be held in English.
