Ibrahim Mahama wird mit Gabriel Schimmeroth über den Aufbau des Savannah Center for Contemporary Art (SCCA) in Tamale, Ghana sprechen. Das von Künstler:innen betriebene Zentrum ist ein Beitrag zur Entwicklung und Expansion der zeitgenössischen Kunstszene in Ghana und widmet sich u.a. im 20. Jahrhundert entstandenen Kunst- und Kulturpraktiken. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil des diesjährigen MARKK in Motion Jahresthema „Raum geben – Raum nehmen“
Ibrahim Mahama setzt sich in monumentalen Installationen mit Themen wie Migration, Globalisierung, Handel und Produktionsbedingungen auseinander. Die Arbeiten des Künstlers greifen auf Materialien aus urbanen Umgebungen zurück, wie Holzreste oder gebrauchte Jutesäcke, die im Tausch erworben und in Zusammenarbeit mit zahlreichen Menschen über architektonische Strukturen drapiert werden. Bekannte Arbeiten wie beispielsweise seinen Beitrag auf der documenta 14 und auf der Venice Biennale, die von Kolonialgeschichte und gemeinschaftlicher Neuproduktion erzählen.

Ibrahim Mahama will speak with Gabriel Schimmeroth about the development of the Savannah Center for Contemporary Art (SCCA) in Tamale, Ghana. The artist-run center is a contribution to the development and expansion of the contemporary art scene in Ghana and is dedicated to art and cultural practices that emerged in the 20th century. The event is part of this year’s MARKK in Motion annual theme, „Giving Space – Taking Space.“
Ibrahim Mahama explores themes of migration, globalization, trade and production conditions in monumental installations. The artist’s works draw on materials from urban environments, such as wood scraps or used jute sacks, which are acquired in exchange and draped over architectural structures in collaboration with numerous people. Well-known works such as his contribution to documenta 14 and the Venice Biennale, which are commenting on colonial history and collaborative new production.
