In den Ruinen der tiefsten Goldminen der Welt und vor dem Hintergrund des Übergangs Südafrikas zur Demokratie suchen illegale Einwander:innen nach den Resten des Glücks. „We are Zama Zama“ folgt dem Leben dreier Bergarbeiter auf ihrer gefährlichen Reise durch die luftleeren Tunnel unter der Erde und das Labyrinth der Illegalität über der Erde. Er ist der Höhepunkt von vier Jahren gemeinsamer Filmarbeit: eine mitreißende, emotional packende Geschichte über Risiko und Überleben.

Rosalind C. Morris ist Professorin für Anthropologie an der Columbia University, New York, Filmemacherin und derzeit Fellow am Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society in Lüneburg. Im MARKK stellt sie ihren Film „We are Zama Zama“ (2021) vor, der vom Leben in den Ruinen von Südafrikas tiefsten Goldminen erzählt. Der Dokumentarfilm wurde zusammen mit illegalisierten Minenarbeitenden und Migrantinnen gedreht, deren Lebensunterhalt von den offiziell geschlossenen Minen ab­hängt. Im Anschluss an den Film wird sie Auszüge aus ihrem Buchprojekt „Anatomy Lessons of a Miner“ vorlesen. Danach folgt eine Diskussion, die von Susanne Leeb moderiert wird.

Die Veranstaltung ist eine Kooperation mit dem Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg.

In the ruins of the world’s deepest gold mines, and against the backdrop of South Africa’s transition to democracy, illegal migrants scavenge for the remainders of fortune. Following the lives of three miners, as they make their perilous journeys in the airless tunnels below ground and in the labyrinth of illegality above ground, We are Zama Zama is the culmination of four years of collaborative filmmaking: an immersive, emotionally gripping story of risk and survival.

Biographical Note:
Rosalind C. Morris is a professor of anthropology at Columbia University, New York, a filmmaker, and currently a fellow at the Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society in Lüneburg. At MARKK she will present her film „We are Zama Zama“ (2021), about life in the ruins of South Africa’s deepest gold mines, which she made in collaboration with the illegalized scavenger-miners and female migrants who make their living there. Following the film, she will read excerpts from her book project, tentatively titled „Anatomy Lessons of a Miner“. The screening will be followed by a discussion moderated by Susanne Leeb.

The event is a cooperation with the Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in Culture and Society at Leuphana University Lüneburg.
